Richtis Gorge

Located about 13 kilometres west from Sitia , at the village Exo Muliana (Greek Εξω Μουλιανά)
An Oasis within the dry Region of Lasithi – Sitia.  The springs of the Sitia mountains form a spring that ends to the beach of Rihti. Beginning from the old bridge , constructed at the beginning of the 1900 , it connected the Northern Villages of the district to the port of Sitia. Within the gorge there are  remains of four water mills (Greek νερόμυλο- neromilo, plural neromili) for the local population from the near by villages to   produce flour (main substance for bread).The water would flow within small channels towards a wooden circle with adjusted paddles, so the momentum would produce the energy needed for the large stone mill to turn , crushing the seeds of barley or wheat.

Vai Palm Forest

The palm forest , located at the North eastern part of Sitia, according to one of the local myths , were planted by Ptolemeon soldiers  stationed at Vai Beach after consuming date fruit.The palm trees are from the Theofrastus variety , that originally grew on the island of Crete. Walking threw a narrow route , from Vai Beach , the path follows the Cretan tearrain approaching isolated beaches of the Eastern Coast, ending at Maridati Beach.

City of Sitia

Sitia , possibly established during the Minoan Era as a minor settlement , became the capital of the Eastern Venetian of province of Sitia. During the venetian era , the town flourished with its commercial suburbs , promoting agricultural products (olive oil, wine, raisins).  Although without the structure of the other cities of the island (Handaka-Heraklio , Canea–Hania, Rethimno), Sitia was considered as a stronghold due to its fortified amphitheatrical location , inspecting the Eastern district. After the Venice – Ottoman war , and the occupation of the island  the town was deserted (1651) for almost 2 centuries.

Liopetro

In the Chamezio area belongs the Liopetro Fortress ((Leon di Pietra) which was probably built in the first years of the Venetian rule on the site of an ancient acropolis. The fortress has been ruined and today one can see remains of the strong wall and towers, a number of vaulted tanks and other buildings. the Church of Agios Ioannis was built on its site.The view from the hill of the fortress is magnificent.

Xerokampos

Xerokampos Zirou is a coastal settlement and beach of the Community of Zirou in the municipality of Sitia. It is located on the east coast of Crete, on the coastal plain, in front of steeply rising mountains. As one of the most remote districts of Lasithi, it is located 44 kilometers south-east Sitia (20kilometres from Zakros, 12kilometres from Ziros). Choose between many of wonderful beaches, such as Argilos Beach, Krinakia (North from Xerokampos settlement with rare and unique vegetation….)

FAQ

Hiking in Eastern Crete requires shoes , water (especially during summer) and sun screen. If any Additional equipment is needed you will be informed via email (some activities the equipment is provided).

Every presentation has a difficulty level., with number 1 being the easiest level. Of course we would advise anyone wishing to arrange hiking or any other event having a medical matter , to contact us so to inform about how to proceed. All personal information or profiles are secured.

Yes every presentation has a difficulty level with the comment referring if it is suitable for children or not. Level 1 is suitable for all ages. Contacting via e mail you could be informed about details about difficulty level , requirements and ideas especially for those recovering from previous injuries.
